I broke this mirror one night while dusting our bedroom wall. I accidentally hit it by my elbow hard enough for it to fall on the floor. I was sad because it was new by the time I broke it. Husband and I had recently bought it at a local furniture store here in the city we reside. What saddened me more was the fact that I was the one who picked it among those that were displayed at that furniture store. It’s a personal mirror placed right inside our bedroom.
I was alarmed when hubby told me that a broken mirror brings 7 years of bad luck. And the bad luck will fall mainly on the person who breaks it. If it’s true, it really is scary. It scared me of course upon hearing it because if it’s true, I had just asked for my own bad luck and for seven long years! It was my first time hearing about that superstition. I’ve never heard of it from my folks. I wonder though on how a broken mirror can affect one’s life. It’s almost a year now since I broke this mirror. If I am not mistaken it was around the month of August last year. So far I didn’t feel unlucky although there are hardships everyday in my life but I don’t think I am being unlucky. Life is life, there really are ups and downs.
Back to this superstitious belief, although breaking a mirror is believed to be bringing you 7 years of bad karma, there are ways to fight it by doing these rituals:
Since the pieces of the mirror can still reflect the corrupted soul, the entire mirror should be ground into dust. No reflection, no problem.
It is also suggested that after you break a mirror, you should invest in a shovel and bury the pieces under a tree during a full moon.
African slaves working in America believed the bad luck could be washed away by placing the pieces in a river flowing in a southerly direction.
Reading these suggestions to counteract the karma reminded me that this broken mirror is still at our little backyard ungrounded. I must dig a whole now and bury it. Do you believe this 7 years of bad luck brought by a broken mirror?
